Morro Bay – Chowa Bowl
Coastal Delight at Morro Rock
There's something extraordinary about discovering authentic poke while road-tripping along California's breathtaking Big Sur coastline. During our journey northward toward Berkeley, we stopped at Chowa Bowl in Morro Bay—a find that deserves its rightful place in any California coast food guide. Luckily, they serve their poke bowls gluten-free!
After a long drive up the coast we laid our feet to rest while trying to find something to eat for dinner as well. With the help of the ‘find me gluten-free’ platform –Chowa Bowl was at the top of the list– we decided to give it a go.
We drove to Chowa Bowl while golden hour was setting in to get a vibrant poke bowl: a feast for both the eyes and the palate. Centered around glistening cubes of fresh ahi tuna, generously sprinkled with black sesame seeds, the bowl achieved the perfect balance between healthy and indulgent. The tuna's deep ruby color signaled its freshness—a testament to Morro Bay's access to quality seafood. The Ahi, being the star of the dish, was elevated by the thoughtful assortment of accompaniments: thinly sliced cucumber ribbons, shredded carrots adding a pop of orange, and perfectly ripe avocado chunks. These elements create a harmonious blend of textures—creamy avocado against crisp vegetables and tender fish.
The simplicity of the biodegradable container speaks to Chowa Bowl's apparent commitment to coastal consciousness—fitting for an eatery along California's environmentally mindful central coast.
For travelers making the iconic Highway 1 journey, this stop offers the perfect refueling option—light enough to keep you energized for the winding coastal roads ahead, yet satisfying enough to tide you over until your next culinary adventure.
Chowa Bowl exemplifies what makes California coastal dining special: fresh ingredients, mindful preparation, and flavors that somehow manage to complement the spectacular views you'll encounter along this legendary stretch of coastline.
