Honolulu – Poke Bar
Fresh from the Sea
Imagine this. You are sitting on one of Honolulu’s magical beaches appreciating the beauty of the Pacific Ocean, with your bare feet in the sand and the warm sun on your skin. What could make this scenario even better? Perhaps some of the freshest gluten-free poke in the world. This scenario is not fictional, but rather a memory from our trip to Honolulu. We were enjoying the pleasures of Waikīkī Beach when we decided to walk over to Poke Bar on Lewers St. to check out their poke menu.
Poke Bar’s menu clearly states which options are not gluten-free and they even have a sign that lists which items are not gluten-free. There is still enough to choose from, even for celiacs like Jilly, and the menu has some surprising options like octopus and baby scallops.
She went for the fresh salmon in combination with the baby scallops. Then added some cucumber, edamame, ginger, wasabi, limu (Hawaiian seaweed), sesame seeds, and Hawaiian salt with the spicy mayo and a drizzle of sesame oil to top it off. Sadly, I couldn’t enjoy the gluten-free poke because I need to adhere to a different but medical diet too (including no raw fish, uncooked or raw meats, unpasteurised cheeses of any kind due to a greater risk of infection). Though by the looks of it, it was a really nice poke bowl and although you can enjoy your poke bowl on the spot we decided to opt for take-out as the beach beckoned invitingly.
The most recent prices are $17,90 for a bowl with two fish selections and $19,90 for a bowl with three fish selections, check out their menu here!
