Leiden - Karelsbiofriet Closed until futher notice
If you are Dutch, from time to time you need to eat a ‘patatje’, as we call it. When you order a ‘patatje’ you will get a plastic little tray filled with fries (not the thin ones) and sauce on top. Mayonaise is on top of most Dutch people’s list, but you can order the fries with various sauces. To list other highly popular ones: e.g. peanut sauce, joppie sauce or several different ones thrown in the mix together ‘patatje oorlog’ (literally meaning fries at war due to all the clashing sauces). Most snackbars reuse the oil where they fry their snacks and fries in. So, because of this, the oil does contain gluten and isn’t safe for celiacs. But not at Karelsbiofriet! Their fries are really gluten-free and 100% organic! You can even get a Dutch kroket, frikandel or kaassoufflet all gluten-free and fried in a separate fryer. Lots of these sauces are also gluten-free! They do not add salt to the fries but instead give small packages of salt with every order, so you can add salt to your own liking. They’re located in the city center of Leiden.
One side note to all the partners of people that can and do eat gluten… They have a lot of different croquette flavors. They all sound very promising and exciting, as in escargot croquette, oyster mushroom croquette or Texels seaweed croquette. But according to my partner, who has almost tried all the different croquettes, the taste isn’t the best and that is even an understatement. Since I am so happy they offer gluten-free fries and snacks for celiacs (and we cannot taste the croquettes anyway), I leave this out of the equation but know that you are warned!
Safety: Fries are gluten-free and snacks with and without gluten are fried in a dedicated separate fryers, but gluten are thus on the premises.
